In legendary Napa Valley, John Caldwell is a legend all his own. Through a larger than life odyssey, John is responsible for introducing the most prized Bordeaux root stock and grapevine clones to California and in the process, has helped to revolutionize the foundation of modern winemaking in North America.
Planted in 1982, Caldwell Vineyard has been the fruit source for a heap of other top Napa Cabernets including Joseph Phelps, Pahlmeyer, Merus, Viader, Randy Dunn, and Philippe Melka. Today, with Marbue Marke at the winemaking helm, John and Joy Caldwell produce 23 different clone- and varietal-specific wines from their 123-acre estate in Coombsville, including wines and a custom barrel program made exclusively for their Society of Smuggler members.
Mi Sueno Winery is the Herrera Family dream. It is a result of decades of Rolando’s perseverance and determination, and an expression of his passion for winemaking in Napa Valley.
Rolando began the journey with nothing more than a strong work ethic, diligence, and with a competitive drive to persevere. “It took me over 30 years to build Mi Sueno, but it only took 15 minutes to come up with the name.”
Mi Sueño is more than a Napa Valley winery that creates ultra-premium wine from estate vineyards. Winemaker, farmer and owner Rolando Herrera has three decades of experience, beginning with mentoring from legendary winemakers Warren Winiarski and Paul Hobbs. Breaking out on his own in 1997, Rolando began the Mi Sueño label by focusing on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Wine production has blossomed over the succeeding 17 years production to nearly 5,000 cases; however, 100% of the vineyards remain estate and personally managed by Rolando.
The reserve program, Herrera, is a collection of two to three barrel size lots from each year’s yield and are a metaphor for his family. The Herrera label design is a dedication to his family name and every bottle is a celebration of his love for his children. Specific varietals in the Herrera program include Cabernet, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Malbec and Petit Verdot. These are not only what Rolando refers to as “the gift of Mother Nature”, but his winemaking interpretation of his children’s personalities.
Travel just 15 minutes west of downtown Napa, up a winding mountain road through deep woods to emerge onto the southern slopes of Mount Veeder, and experience a different side of the Napa Valley at Fontanella Family Winery. Husband and wife team Jeff and Karen Fontanella have been producing small quantities of award-winning Chardonnay, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Sauvignon since opening their doors in 2008. Enjoy an intimate hour-long tasting at this estate winery which includes a tour of the barrel room, small bites on the sunny patio, and, if you’re lucky, a visit from winery dogs Riley and Payton.
