Beautiful Books You Need to Read Before Your Wine Tasting Trip to Napa Valley

by Javy on 2024-04-04 in Filed Under: Activities in Napa

We’ve been contemplating how reading shapes our worldview by adding nuance, depth, and breadth to it. Though we may not consider ourselves avid readers, our insatiable hunger for knowledge often leads us to browse the shelves of local bookstores, selecting one or two tomes to savor while indulging in a tasting.

Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting a curator from a well-known East Coast library. Our time together inspired us to share a list of books you might find enticing to read before visiting Napa Valley.

  1. “The House of Mondavi: The Rise and Fall of an American Wine Dynasty” by Julia Flynn Siler – This book offers a captivating insider’s look into the Mondavi family, one of the most influential families in the Napa Valley wine industry. It delves into scandals, betrayals, victories, rivalries, and ambitions, blurring the lines between fact and fiction across four generations.
  2. “The Wine Bible” by Karen MacNeil – Consider this book essential reading for anyone entertaining clients. It provides a comprehensive yet digestible introduction to wine, enabling you to engage in fluid and enjoyable conversations without coming across as pretentious.
  3. “Napa: The Story of an American Eden” by James Conaway – Immerse yourself in the history and evolution of Napa Valley through this captivating narrative. Conaway’s exploration traces Napa’s journey from a rural farming community to a globally renowned wine region, offering valuable insights into the region’s key figures and its modern aristocracy. An updated edition is overdue to acknowledge the new wave of wine pioneers shaping the region.
  4. “Cork Dork: A Wine-Fueled Adventure Among the Obsessive Sommeliers, Big Bottle Hunters, and Rogue Scientists Who Taught Me to Live for Taste” by Bianca Bosker – Join Bosker on her journey from wine novice to certified sommelier as she delves into the world of wine. While wine tasting may seem elitist from the outside, Bosker unveils an underground world of tastings and exclusivity that few experience firsthand.
  5. “Sideways” by Rex Pickett – This humorous novel, famously adapted into a hit film, follows two friends on a wine-tasting road trip through California’s wine country, including the Santa Ynez Valley, akin to Napa. It’s a delightful read that sets the perfect mood for wine exploration, ideally enjoyed by the poolside with a glass of bubbly or Sauvignon Blanc.
  6. “Wine People” by Michelle Wildgen – Released in 2023, this novel offers a glorious insider perspective on being a woman in a male-dominated industry and the challenges of achieving success against all odds.

We eagerly anticipate your visit. Each of our guests is cherished, and we strive to make every wine-tasting trip to Napa an unforgettable experience.

With warm regards,

The Javys

Grassi Wines – A Hidden Gem to Upgrade Your Wine Library

by Javy on 2023-11-08 in Filed Under: Activities in Napa

Let’s talk wine.

As the colder season envelops us, we find ourselves with a bit more time for reflection, appreciating the countless gifts that surround us. It’s a season that allows us to pause and acknowledge the collective effort that makes our jobs possible, a collective that teaches us, opens their doors, and delivers beautiful experiences to our cherished guests.

Grassi Wines

My husband and I are in the business of curating unforgettable experiences, continually refining our lists of wineries to include in the itineraries of both new enthusiasts and seasoned connoisseurs. Our goal is simple: to make every visit to Napa an extraordinary one, planting a seed of curiosity and a profound love for superb wines that beckons you back time and time again.

When we come across greatness, we can’t help but share it, which brings me to our dear friends at Grassi Wines, and in particular, their extraordinary viticulturist, Miguel. Before I delve into Miguel’s impressive achievements, it’s essential to emphasize that above all, Miguel is a friend and a family man. We feel incredibly fortunate to know him.

Much like myself, Miguel arrived in Napa as an immigrant at the tender age of thirteen, embarking on a journey that led him to toil in the fields, much like many of us did. Against all odds, Napa, with its unique magic and spirit of collaboration, has welcomed countless sons and daughters who, through their adoption of this land, have come to realize the American Dream. Miguel’s journey is a remarkable one, and Wine Enthusiast captured it beautifully when they named him Viticulturist of the Year in 2020. You can read more about his inspiring story here: Miguel Luna

Now, let’s shift our focus to Grassi and why I’m eager to introduce you to their wines . Nestled between the Stags Leap District to the south and Coombsville to the north, Grassi resides within the heart of the Napa Valley AVA. The land where their grapes thrive presents a unique challenge to the vines, limiting their vigor and yielding fruit with extraordinary flavor. Exceptional grapes, guided by an exceptional man, translate into extraordinary wines. This has led Grassi to be recognized by Robert Parker as a favorite under-the-radar producer in Napa. Maayan Koschitzky, their winemaker, is a maestro of his craft. Having honed his skills with renowned names like Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle, Maayan works his magic on Grassi’s harvest, transforming it into pure palate-enchanting elixirs.

We can connect you with Grassi and help you secure limited allocations of their very special wines. We believe your private cellar will be better for it.

Emat @ Vinicola Hilo Negro: A Culinary Adventure You Don’t Want to Miss

by Javy on 2023-07-18 in Filed Under: restaurants

Emat @ Vinicola Hilo Negro

As a wine and culinary expert, I have made a promise to my wine-loving friends to meticulously document my adventures in Valle de Guadalupe. Today, I want to provide you with an exclusive glimpse into the hidden culinary gems of this enchanting region. During my recent visit, one restaurant that captured my attention was Emat, the signature farm-to-table establishment at Vinicola Hilo Negro. Under the skilled guidance of Chef Eduardo Salgado, Emat offers a sensory experience that leaves no detail unattended.

Chef Eduardo Salgado’s Journey:

Chef Eduardo Salgado, a graduate of the esteemed Culinary Institute of America (CIA), is at the helm of Emat. His culinary journey has taken him across the globe, where he honed his skills under the tutelage of world-renowned chefs in Barcelona and Via Veneto. His formal training in Japanese cuisine and experience working with masters such as David Chang and Masa Takayama have provided him with a unique perspective on flavors and techniques.

Elevated Local Flavors:

One of the things that impressed me most about Emat was Chef Salgado’s ability to elevate the essence of local flavors while infusing them with his own creative flair. Each dish that graced our table was a work of art, reflecting the passion and expertise behind its creation.

Unforgettable Culinary Delights:

Emat’s menu holds a treasure trove of unforgettable culinary delights. As I delved into the offerings, two dishes stood out, leaving an indelible mark on my taste buds. The Octopus Tartar, a harmonious blend of tender octopus, vibrant herbs, and delicate seasonings, took me on a journey of exquisite flavors. And then there was the White Miso Cod—an ethereal masterpiece that left me craving for more. The fish, perfectly cooked to melt-in-your-mouth perfection, was bathed in a delicate white miso sauce that complemented its natural sweetness.

A Splurge Worth Indulging In (Meat Lovers Alert):

For those who appreciate the magic that unfolds when superior beef meets exceptional wine, I wholeheartedly recommend indulging in the Japanese Wagyu A5. This cut of beef is a testament to simplicity and perfection, both in its origin and execution. The marbling, tenderness, and rich umami flavors will leave you utterly mesmerized.

A Memorable Finale Because Sweet Tooth is My Middle Name:

No culinary experience would be complete without a memorable finale, and Emat delivers just that. Their Corn Flan with Rompope Ice Cream is a delightful combination of textures and flavors. The creamy flan, infused with the essence of sweet corn, harmonizes beautifully with the velvety rompope ice cream, leaving a lingering sweetness on the palate.

Pairings to Savor:

At Emat, the wine selection is carefully curated to complement the culinary creations. My husband and I had the pleasure of discovering the Nido de Abeja Primitivo, a wine that perfectly complemented our meal. Its luscious notes of dark berries and hints of spice added a layer of complexity to the dishes, creating a harmonious symphony of flavors. As a special treat, we rewarded ourselves with a bottle of Alta Costura, a collaboration between Hilo Negro, Beckstoffer Cabernet, and Nebbiolo. Its exceptional quality and unique character made it a memorable companion to our dining experience.

In closing, I urge you to pay a visit to Emat at Vinicola Hilo Negro during your time in Valle de Guadalupe. Chef Eduardo Salgado’s culinary prowess, combined with the breathtaking flavors and meticulously crafted dishes, will transport you to a realm of pure gastronomic delight. And don’t forget to mention that the Javys sent you. Cheers to unforgettable experiences and delightful discoveries!
